A Boring Weekend
Speaking of things that were much needed in my life, I finally deactivated my Instagram account. No more mindless scrolling, no more post binge malaise if you will. If you don’t know what post binge malaise is It’s that sense of emptiness or loss you might feel when you finish an entire series or spend an extended period scrolling through social media platform.
We all know that outside is where we belong. As a predominantly portrait photographer I’ve had several models flake/cancel/ not respond to me, leading me with nothing to shoot, nothing to scroll and I don’t quite enjoy watching Television. Starting out my lazy Sunday Morning restless and angst I decided that I can’t spend the day in the house, I’d potentially lose my marbles if I did.
I loaded up a lens that I seldom use on the C330, the Mamiya Super-Sekor 180mm F4.5. My initial thoughts were to go out and do some stranger portraits; you know asking random strangers if I could make their image but, Providence doesn’t give me the same feeling that I get when I’m walking the Newbury Street to Boston Public Gardens/Boston Commons/The Charles River. I also wasn’t sure what this lens would give me and didn’t want to end up in a situation making images of strangers, promising to send them the photos and not being able to turn it around. Instead I opted to post up on one end of the Providence River Pedestrian Bridge and “zone focus” the Mamiya TLR and snap portrait of people on their Sunday walks. I would frame my shots and wait until someone stepped into the zone and snap away.
These photos were far from “sneaky” street photography shots but given the size of the lens and the camera combined. However, if you stand in one position long enough eventually you blend in with the scene you are just another person on a bridge with a c
I think where this lens will shine is in portraits, evidenced by the image of the car to start today’s blog and the portrait of the Pidgeon below. All of the photos in todays series was taken on Ilford HP5+1, Shutter speed 1/250th of a second hovering around and aperture F11 and F22.
Hope you enjoy the images, and consider signing up for my weekly blog updates. These will be personal blog updates, alongside up to 10 images I have made that. Hope you enjoy!
